Nissan has just begun the stage of designing and creating a new platform for the new generation GT-R. In fact, the Japanese manufacturer is yet to decide whether the new powertrain on this model will be electrified or not.
However, although it is still at an early stage of development, Nissan’s chief designer, Alfonso Albaisa, said the next generation of the GT-R will not be inspired by the GTR-50, which was presented at the Goodwood Speed Festival. Instead, he claims that Nissan new flagship in the performance car segment will be a completely unique car, albeit the fastest super sports model in the world.
Although Albaisa works hard on sketches and design proposals for the new generation of the GT-R, he himself acknowledged that he can not start seriously before the new platform and the new powertrain have been completed.
“The challenge is for engineers to be honest,” he said. “We will do our best in the best way when it comes to the time, but we are not even close to it,” he added.
This means that the new GT-R is still years away from premiere and production, and there is a great chance that it will not be introduced before the next decade.
Albaisa also acknowledged that there are great chances that the new generation of the GT-R will also get some kind of electrified powertrain, but for now nothing has been confirmed. “Whether we decide on electric drive or not, we can achieve great power,” he said.
“In any case, we are developing a new platform, and our goal is clear: we want the GT-R to be the fastest car in its segment. He must have a “track”, and he must have advanced technology, which does not mean that there must be an electric car, too, “Albaisa said.
Nissan has previously developed a hybrid powertrain with a twin-turbo triple V6 engine for the LMP1 GT-R racing car, which could be an insight into what we can expect from the new generation GT-R.
Namely, the current generation of this model develops 562 horsepower, and its successor could develop over 600 horsepower.
